Cottage renovation in maryland, 2018

The client loved the quirky nature of her house but wanted to open up the main living space to her park-like backyard as well as rethink the kitchen and dining rooms. We flipped the kitchen and the dining room and opened up the rear wall with new fixed windows and sliding doors that lead to a new bluestone terrace. We removed interior walls and restructured the new dining area to open it up to the kitchen area, and added a small entry vestibule from the rear yard with coathooks, a bench and a dog door for the clients’ dogs to come and go as they please.

The client wanted to bring elements of her previous California house to the facade, which led us to replace the original siding with cheerful yellow stucco. We replaced the front door, painted it Frida Kahlo blue, and added a new portico to clearly mark the entry to the house. Late in the project we decided to add a pergola over the rear terrace and a garage in front of the house, for which we successfully received a variance from Montgomery County.
